The State Bank of India (SBI) is the largest and oldest
public sector bank in India. Established in 1806 as the
Bank of Calcutta, it was later renamed the Bank of
Bengal in 1809. In 1921, these three banks merged to
form the Imperial Bank of India, which eventually became
the State Bank of India in 1955. SBI is a
government-owned institution with its headquarters in
Mumbai, Maharashtra.
